The Hilly Hundred is the granddaddy of bike events in Indiana. Now in its 43rd year, it hosts nearly 5,000 riders each year for its two-day, 50-miles-a day course that winds through the autumn-tinted hills outside Bloomington, giving bikers a challenge of climbing about 3,000 feet each day. Relief is in sight, however, at well-organized rest stops featuring refreshments, live entertainment and a party atmosphere.
“It’s really more a people event than a bike event,” said organizer Skip Higgins, adding that the race is frequented by their-generation riders, friends who make the Hilly a reunion and cyclists who use the event to cap-off a season of summer riding.
Get a different view of downtown Indianapolis during the annual N.I.T.E. Ride, a midnight 20-miler that leads 2,500 cyclists along a blocked-off course through Indy’s city streets - and to a check of a party afterwards.
The Northern Indiana Fat & Skinny Tire festival has a little something for every tire size, from multi-length road tours, mountain bike racing, road racing, and BMX stunt shows. As with any shindig, you can expect an ample offering of food, beverages and live entertainment.
