This summer I have two distinctive goals in parenting, teaching my daughter to ride her bike and how to swim. Both skills every child need to be a successful kid and both will hopefully stay with her for the rest of her life. Remembering back to the day when I was a kid, when I wasn’t swimming, I was on my bike and vice versa. The bike was my ticket to freedom, the ability to go somewhere on a whim... maybe even to swim. That’s the way ti should be, instead of being parked in front of a video game system for hours on end. I digress- this is literally a tirade that could fill volumes.

Pick your apocalypse, peak oil, and death of the dollar, the dreaded end of the Mayan calendar. We’ll all be partying like it’s December 21, 2012 if we convert our old fashioned on grid houses into new school people powered homes.
In the wake of British Petroleum poisoning the Gulf of Mexico, The Human Powered Home makes a lot of sense. No longer do we need to wear the yoke of petrochemicals when we have all the power we need in our legs.

The Hilly Hundred is the granddaddy of bike events in Indiana. Now in its 43rd year, it hosts nearly 5,000 riders each year for its two-day, 50-miles-a day course that winds through the autumn-tinted hills outside Bloomington, giving bikers a challenge of climbing about 3,000 feet each day. Relief is in sight, however, at well-organized rest stops featuring refreshments, live entertainment and a party atmosphere.

Those who prefer a long ride can talk to Kathy Smith. She leads cyclists on 100-mile-a-day, weeklong excursions with Touring Ride in Rural Indiana (Triri), where cyclists pedal from one state park or attraction to the next (with caterers and mechanics in tow). For example, one trip takes cyclist from Earlham College in Richmond to Brown County, Clifty Falls, Spring Mill state parks, then to Bloomington and Terre Haute, before circling back.

The terrain in Northern Indiana might be more sedate than the hills of Brown County, but the scenery is equally inviting. Marshall County has laid out four loos extending from Plymouth. Nicely mapped and clearly marked along sun-dappled roadways, the rides of 16, 31, 41, and 63 miles allow for peaceful at-your-pace days in the country matched with the creature comforts of nearby Culver and around the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee.
